TRIP TO TUROSS HEADS, NEW YEAR’S DAY

Taking gorgeous Poppy with us, we get petrol @ Queanbeyan, then stop @ Bangalore. On some of the farms we pass, some people are working – on New Year’s Day! On the radio, we hear that one family’s taking their ‘mob’ of 400 cattle to Kosziusko grasses. On the way, 9 heifers/calves have been born.

Over a bridge we pass plenty of cows. The grass looks green. We cross the Shoalhaven River, Braidwood, Bateman’s Bay, Major’s Creek. We’re on the turn to Nelligen. And the grass is still green. We’re listening to Suzi Quatro on the way to the Molongolo River. Suddenlythe road becomes so windy, winding round like a serpent. After we pass the Western Distributor Road, the ground is lush, with ferns cut by the sharp granite road, and by boulders put there by land-owners.

Oh, Nelligen is so pretty! Boats bob on the water. We stop for some fresh local seafood. The cut road is yellow now. On my right, two teddy bears hang from a tree, thin as a post. There’s a red ribbon underneath. We leave Bateman’s Bay. “Oh, they ‘ve got a zoo there!” “It’s a private zoo, connected to Canberra’s, and to the Taronga Zoo. The people who bought it said they didn’t know anything about zoos, just that they liked them.”

I love the Moruya River, there’s cows on my right – brown, black and cream. Now I can see the Coila Creek, and to the right, the Coila Creek Road. At Hector McWilliams Drive, I see the ‘holiday inn’ name that always makes me smile: the ‘Tern Inn’. We arrive at Jenny’s holiday house (‘White Pebbles’), unpack, and take Poppy for a walk. I just love it!
